Health Center Team

John Hernandez, DNP

John, a father of two and retired Navy veteran, brings a diverse
background and extensive expertise to his role as a Family Nurse Practitioner to
deliver a broad scope of primary care services, including joint injections,
dermatological procedures, and behavioral health care. John began his career as
a head chef before serving in the Navy working on FA-18 fighter aircraft. John
majored in biology and chemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and
was a biochemistry research assistant at the Institute for Drug Discovery before
finishing his Master’s of Nursing and Doctorate of Nursing Practice.
Now a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner, John has developed practical skills over his career that allow him to uniquely translate science and evidence into meaningful health outcomes for his patients. John's rich life experiences and
professional journey through the culinary and military fields have shaped his empathetic approach to patient care, making him a valued member of the Sheboygan care team.

Karen Bonner, NP, M.S.

Karen has been a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner since 2001, providing primary care to patients at the Sheboygan InHealth Clinic since it opened in 2008. Karen obtained her Bachelor and Master of Science Degrees from Northen Illinois University and Family Nurse Practitioner Post-Master’s Certificate through the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Prior to moving to Sheboygan, Karen worked for St. Francis Hospital, Milwaukee, dividing her time between their Well Woman Program, Women’s Cardiac Prevention Program, and providing care to patients without insurance at the Angel of Hope Clinic.

Karen’s family includes her spouse and two sons. She recently celebrated her 30th wedding anniversary with a scuba diving trip to Little Cayman. Her sons share her love of science, with one being a biopharmaceutical scientist and the other attending medical school at the University of Iowa.

Patients would agree that Karen’s passion is prevention and control of chronic health conditions. She challenges her patients to continue setting goals and making lifestyle efforts to optimize their health. Karen is thankful that her role at the InHealth Clinic affords her time to focus on lifestyle coaching to help manage chronic conditions. Karen practices what she preaches by maintaining an active lifestyle. Her favorite activities combine time with family, nature, and exercise. She loves playing tennis, volleyball, pickleball, walking, bike riding and kayaking.

Barbara Backus, NP

Barbara began her career working her way through the education process from the ground level, starting as a nursing assistant while in high school to test her desire for a medical career. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in nursing through UW-GB and worked for several years in challenging specialty areas, including critical care, neonatal care, dialysis, homecare, and hospice care. Her motto was “learning is a lifestyle,” which motivated her to earn a Master’s degree from UW-Oshkosh while raising 4 children. She became a board-certified family nurse practitioner and continues to love her work in this area.

Barbara believes in holistic care and empowering each client to become an active participant in their care. She loves educating clients about their health so they become confident in directing their own care. In her role, she delivers primary care from childhood to adulthood to end-of-life care and performs skin evaluations checking for cancer, dermatological procedures, wellness care, behavioral health care, and disease management.

She believes everyone should have the opportunity to live life to its fullest and challenges clients to do this through excellent medical care to help reach their highest health potential for fulfilling this goal.

Brad Wiegand, D.C., M.S.

Brad was born and raised in Bellingham, WA, a town two hours north of Seattle—a city he cheers for as a dedicated Seahawks fan. Pursuing his passion for chiropractic care, Brad attended the University of Western States in Portland, OR. It was there that he met his future wife, Rachel. After completing their studies in 2012, the couple moved to Sheboygan, where Brad has dedicated himself to enhancing the health and well-being of the community through expert chiropractic care.

Brad and his wife are proud parents to two daughters, Lily and Poppy. Most of their time is devoted to running the girls to various extracurricular activities, including hockey, soccer, swimming, and tennis. Brad enjoys playing softball in the summer and seizing every opportunity to ski during the winter months.
